Advice Tells Us What to Do
Experience helps us understand why it matters.
When we're facing an important decision, one of the first things we do is ask for advice.
We ask friends.
Family.
People we trust.
People who have been there before.
Advice is valuable.
It gives us ideas we may not have considered.
It helps us avoid mistakes.
Sometimes it gives us the confidence to take the next step.
But advice has limits.
Advice tells us what worked for someone else.
Experience helps us understand why it worked.
That's an important difference.
Two people can make the same decision and have completely different outcomes.
Not because one made the "right" choice.
Because their lives, priorities, and circumstances weren't the same.
That's why listening to someone's experience can be more valuable than simply asking for advice.
Experience reveals the questions they wished they had asked.
The challenges they didn't expect.
The trade-offs they didn't see coming.
And sometimes, the things they would never change.
Those stories don't tell us what to do.
They help us understand what matters.
I've found that's true whether we're talking about aging, our homes, our families, or everyday life.
The goal isn't to collect more advice.
The goal is to understand enough to make the decision that's right for us.
Because information gives us knowledge.
Experience gives us perspective.
And perspective often leads to better decisions.
